2011 Desert Rampage
The sun was bright. The red dirt perfect. Everyone was glancing nervously at everyone else. Looking. For new bikes. New fitness. To see who was serious on this first weekend of March.
The Race for The Race
Wow. Did that just happen? Registration for The Park City Point 2 Point opened last night at 7:00 PM. There were 320 spots available. At 7:06 PM they were gone. Leading up to—and immediately following—the frenzy Twitter was buzzing: And then, as soon as it had begun… it was over. The entire experience was… well… Indeed. The […]
An Open Letter to Promoters
I’ve taken the liberty to offer up some advice. It’s probably unneeded, and as such, should go unheeded. However, I’ve ridden a few events over the years, and thought you might like to know what goes through the head (besides delusions of grandeur) of a racer when he looks for an event to blow his money and crash his overly unrealistic ambitions.

But nonetheless, I feel like I ought to be improving week after week. Instead, I think I’m going backwards. Saturday’s race in the driving […]
Cross Logic (UTCX 4)
Cyclocross defies logic. It seems inconceivable that one could ride so fast*, and through such heinous conditions, on what amounts to a technologically deficient bike. And yet… there it is. Fast. Amazingly so. And incredibly fun. It is almost as if the ‘cross bike is the natural and obvious design for off-road riding. Not necessarily […]
Learning Curves
Cyclocross is wholly different than anything I’ve ever tried before. How so? There is no place to hide. Weaknesses are laid bare with alarming clarity. And while that can be true of mountain or road racing, the small and fast nature of ‘cross courses mean that spectators are going to see the flailing and mashing […]
