I’m Grizzly Adam. I live in Utah, and like to play in the nearby mountains. I have 5 kids, and a very patient wife. I love to write. I especially love to write about playing in the mountains.

This blog is an attempt to explore the emotions and the experiences underlying outdoor sports – specifically endurance mountain biking and backcountry skiing. I seek to learn what it is that presses an individual to push beyond the mental and physical limits of what society deems normal and acceptable.

From the sublime to the ridiculous, I write my thoughts and observations about what Edward Abbey called the “mythical and the tangible”.

I also share photos from my adventures. Living along the Wasatch Front in Utah grants me untold opportunities to mountain bike, hike, backcountry ski and explore a vast wilderness.  The mysterious and splendid deserts of Moab, and the barren red rock of Saint George are also within my grasp. I live in an outdoor paradise.

Thanks for visiting. Stick around, browse the archives, and come back often.

[…] grizzlyadam You don’t realize exactly how warm having a beard is until you get rid of it. You take your beard for granted. Then one crisp November day, you decide to shave it off. You walk outside and have a brisk fall breeze hit you in the face. You realize you’ve made a horrible mistake. Why would you shave your face in the middle of the winter? Having fur makes you warmer. Beards are fur, so your face is warmer. Duh. […]

Just read your stunning TD piece in the Cordillera, then found you here.
So beautifully you sum up the anxieties that I also harboured before jumping into “the abyss” this year. Certainly no coward. Sometimes you’ve just got to follow your gut, even if you can’t rationalise why. Somehow I suspect you will give it another crack some time, and when you do I’ll be watching your dot and cheering you on from Oz.
