Ignore the Propaganda

Ignore the Propaganda

Propaganda is everywhere. Everywhere. We’ve long since left behind the era of objectivity. Indeed, I do not know if such an era has ever existed. Everything we see and hear is meant to persuade minds, to cloud vision, and to corral individuals into the herd of anonymity and status quo. Public school is boot camp in the army […]

Re-Balanced

Re-Balanced

The universe is back in balance. After a couple of nice results in recent races, I was starting to think that I had arrived. Alas, those results were artificially inflated. Monday, the big guns came out to play, and they restored the Natural Order of Things. I licked my wounds, and went home… …where I grilled brats and burgers. […]

5 Year Plan

5 Year Plan

I don’t know what I will be doing in 5 years, and frankly, I don’t care. So long as a bike is still involved, then whatever it is I spend my days doing won’t really matter. As long I have the bike to keep me sane, healthy, and forward-focused, I will be happy. In other words, in 5 years, I hope I’m doing most of the same things I am doing today. Riding. Writing. And having the time of my life trying to improve at each.

It’s Supposed to Be Fun

It’s Supposed to Be Fun

The group splintered immediately. The stout, steep climb broke us apart like waves on breakwater. Those with the legs, rode away up the hill. The rest of us labored painfully over the top. I was dizzy. My breathing was deliberate and forced. My legs were screaming. “Why do I feel so sluggish?” I wondered if my […]

Most Scenic Byway (Photos)

Yesterday I said that the Alpine Loop is “the most scenic road in North America.” I may have been exaggerating, but I’m not so sure. You be the judge:

Sundance, Spinning

Sundance, Spinning

The North Fork of Provo Canyon is wonderful. In 1944 Ray and Eva Stewart opened a small ski resort in the shadow of Big Provo Cirque, and Timpanogos. 25 years later, the resort, and many of the adjacent acres, were bought by Robert Redford. He called the place Sundance. I first remember visiting Sundance when […]

Wanted: More Cyclists

It’s impossible to pinpoint exactly when I started calling myself “a cyclist”. Maybe it happened when I started using clipless pedals. Or the first time I rode with a heart rate monitor. Or when I started shaving my legs more often than my wife was shaving hers. I once read (in Bicycling, if I remember correctly) that riding […]

Slay the Dragon

Posted by on May 9, 2012 in Bike | 3 Comments

Here be dragons. Mythology is rampant with dragons. Dragons occupy our collective stories, from ancient Greece, to China, India, and Europe, and even to current American and English pop-culture. The dragon is a universal symbol of evil, chaos, or struggle. Throughout mythology a dragon is always slain by a hero, often an unsuspecting, humble, reluctant everyman; a […]
