How To: Dawn Patrol

Posted by on Dec 17, 2010 in How To, Ski | 5 Comments

There is nothing inherently complex about a Dawn Patrol. And yes, despite Dug’s insistence to the contrary, I will now, and forever, use that term.

Step 1: Get up absurdly early and hike up a mountain.

Step 2: Keep hiking.

Step 3: Hike a little more. And enjoy the sunrise.

Step 4: Stop hiking. Commiserate with friends about the recently finished hike.

Step 5: Ski down the mountain.

Step 6: Take epic snow-beard self portrait.

Step 7: Repeat any of the above as needed.

Step 6 is missing the “boogersicles”.

Love the long-exposure shots. The clouds of breath trailing behind Mike in the second one are particularly cool. Nice work.

Love a good Dawn Patrol in the Meadow Chutes, plus there are some great Meadows to skip through when the avalanche danger is high. Great pictures.

Love how the exposure over time through the lights, shows the rhythum of the hike up. Would be a cool project to document that based on the pitch of the skin track.

I’d like to see a series.

Maybe I’ll join you one of these mornings, provided my skins show up.

      That would be cool.
