Cornice Bomb (video)

Written by  //  February 18, 2010  //  Ski, Video  //  11 Comments

We kicked a small cornice off one of Scotties shoulders, and ripped out a small and shallow soft slab avalanche with it. The riding conditions were quite good, if rather sensitive on the steeper slopes. Aaron did the kicking while he was tied to Mark who stood back in a safe zone, just in case the cornice broke under Aaron’s feet and tried to take him for a ride. There is more to the days story, but alas, it will have to wait for another time. In the meantime, I give you Scotties Bowl, one of our favorite Dawn Patrol lines:

Oh you know how to scare your poor Mama! So glad to see the word, “safe” included somewhere in the post. Do I dare even use the word, “Why?”

Mom, A cornice is an excellent way to test a slope for weakness. It plops down onto the snow and the sudden added weight will (hopefully) trigger any weak snow. Better a chunk of snow, than a person. Plus, it’s really fun. Just have to make sure nobody is below.

Watching this vid makes me want to take up skiing again. Do you run the Go Pro Hero or the Hero HD?

Great times. Love watching the video after the fact. Almost as fun as being there. Almost.

Nice video. Looks like some really good conditions. I need to get up and clear out my lungs. Liking the new look of the site.

Good stuff. Glad nothing too exciting happened that morning… Too bad you didn’t get Tyler dropping in. He makes it look too good/easy.

Totally boring day. That is Tyler dropping in by the way. I conveniently edited out my face plant though…

How long have you been skiing for Grizzly? Am I correct in thinking that you just took it up again after a long absence last year (I’m trying to remember back to last winter’s posts….)

    • Grizzly Adam February 19, 2010 at 12:35 pm ·

That’s correct. I skied a lot when I was a kid and into my teens. Picked it up in earnest last year after a few years of trying to ride my bike through the Wasatch winters. I had never BC skied at all until last year. I think I am starting to get my form and legs under me a bit…

Right on man, glad you got back into it. Skiing is what’s up! It’s been great getting a little taste of powder every now and then through your blog. Helps remind me that I won’t always be living in Georgia, haha!
