If I'm hurting on a hill and assume others are too, I might back off, which can hurt a lot when you get passed by several people. If I'm feeling better than others, I should take advantage of that. I guess the main point is to always recognize your own threshold and stick to it, assuming you can back off even a little bit will put you out of contention.
